Justice Michelle Arana Elevated, First Woman Acting CJ
posted (March 19, 2020)

For the first time in Belize's history, the acting Chief Justice is expected to be a woman. She is Justice Michelle Arana who is expected to take over, as former CJ Kenneth Benjamin reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 today.  Arana - who has been a Supreme Court judge since 2006 - is expected to take over as acting CJ, because she is the most senior judge on the bench.  Her appointment would most likely be temporary until a new permanent Chief Justice can be found.

As regards Benjamin, there was some speculation as to whether he would be given an extension contract to finish up with matters still pending before him, including, we are told, about 5 outstanding judgements.  He is still expected to submit those judgements.

Note: An earlier version of this story said Justice Arana had been elevated; she has not.  It is being considered.
