Unlicensed Cop Killed Man In Accident
posted (April 6, 2020)
A man was killed in a traffic accident in Dangriga Town yesterday, and a police officer without a valid license, in an unlicensed vehicle is to blame.

Police say that at around 5:40 p.m, they responded to an accident report on George Price Drive. When they arrived they found a black and blue Lifan motorcycle with its front portion wrecked. 2 men were lying on the left side of the road, and they were later identified as Villafranco and 18-year-old Jaheed Johnson, who are both residents of the New Site area. The cops also found a dark blue Toyota 4Runner SUV, which was also damaged near the right passenger door.

What police have been able to determine so far is that the vehicle was being driven by the 40-year-old police officer, Elton Alexander Elijio. The exact sequence of events is not known, but Elijio was driving across the George Price Drive when the motorcycle slammed into the passenger side of the 4Runner. Both Villafranco and Johnson were flung from the motorcycle due to the impact. They both suffered head and body injuries, and they were transported to the Southern Regional Hospital. Johnson arrived in a stable condition, but Villafranco had to be transferred to the KHMH. Villafranco later passed away at the national referral hospital.

Police have since arrested and charged Corporal Elijio with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, driving without a valid drivers license, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, failing to conform to a traffic sign, negligent grievous harm, and failing to provide a specimen for testing. He has since been arraigned in Magistrate's Court, and he has been offered on bail in the sum of 10 thousand dollars. He must return to court on July 6th, 2020.
