And while those Korean tests won't be donated, Belize has received a
generous donation from the Government of Taiwan. It's a donation that
was received during a virtual meeting between Taiwan's Ambassador Remus
Li-Ko Chen and a masked and gloved Prime Minister of Belize.
This donation is designated for urgently needed additional personal
protective equipment, medical equipment, testing kits, and laboratory
supplies for frontline medical service providers countrywide.
The Taiwanese Ambassador reassured Belizeans that Taiwan would continue
to share its first-hand experiences and expertise with medical
professionals in Belize. For his part, Prime Minister Barrow
congratulated and thanked Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen for her
concern for the region and for Belize in particular.
Remus Li-Ko Chen - Taiwan Ambassador
"Taiwan, as Belize's true friend of all times, shall stand shoulder to
shoulder with you during this crisis. Dear Prime Minister, now on
behalf of the government of the Republic of China, Taiwan, I therefore
have the great honour to present a contribution of 2 million Belizean
dollars to you, to help the government and the people of Belize in
procuring urgently needed protective equipment, medical equipment,
testing kits and laboratory supplies for your brave and dedicated
frontline medical services providers in all corners of Belize. Apart
from this financial contribution, more help is on the way from Taiwan.
A total of 260 thousand face masks, 6 thermal imaging body temperature
detections systems and dozens of forehead thermometers will be
delivered to Belize in the coming weeks. In addition, Taiwanese health
experts have already and will continue to share their first-hand
experiences and world class expertise in dealing with COVID-19 with
their Belizean counterparts via telecommunication or video
conferencing."
Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister
"Of course, we are extremely grateful for the help that Taiwan is
extending to Belize as demonstrated by the virtual cheque that you are
presenting to me during this virtual meeting. I do want to make the
point that Belizeans need to be informed that this 2 million dollar
cheque, is in addition to all that you have already enumerated that is
still to come but also in addition to an initial amount of 500 thousand
Belize dollars that you have right at the start directly to the
Ministry of Health. I take the opportunity to salute President Wen at
this particular moment and to thank her especially for Taiwan's immense
generosity as indicated both by this virtual cheque and by all else
that you have recited."
Taiwan's first hand expertise could be invaluable - that island nation
has largely succeeded in containing the coronavirus, despite being shut
out of the world health Organization.
This donation has now been added to Taiwan's March 25th contribution
which was an additional BZ$2 million aimed at containing the spread of
COVID-19 in Belize.
