Here at Channel 7, you’ll forgive us for questioning the “good guyâ€
depiction of these Central American LPG companies. After all, back in
February of 2011, our News Director, Jules Vasquez, exposed them in an
investigative journalism piece for serially defrauding Belizean
consumers.
They were charging consumers for butane that they never went into the
tank. There was no accurate, metered measurement to tell if what was
paid for, was what actually pumped into your gas tank.
After his story aired, and the public outrage was stirred and
regulatory changes made because of that fraud, someone even tried to
put out a hit on him and businessman Lascelle Arnold for unearthing it.
For context, here’s that story from 9 years ago:
Again, that was in 2011.
Since then and because of those revelations significant reform was
introduced to the LPG industry to meter and specify the ratio of butane
to propane sold as LPG, and to require that scales be added to delivery
truck to verify value for money - but that second requirement has
fallen by the wayside - even though it is the law.
