And while the police got publicly pilloried by a cabinet minister for that mis-step, today the commissioner - speaking generally - said that, right now, the police are under pressure - and he has to let some things slide:

"As administrators we are not everywhere we cannot see everything that is taking place so when things are highlighted to us then it's a matter for us to ensure that we take appropriate action to address the issues and Police are no saints. In a time like this, we are policing in very tough and stressful times the officers are human beings. They are subject to making mistakes and when it comes to making mild mistakes I don't think that we should kill them we have to understand the difficulty that they are in as well and we have to strike a balance where that is concerned."
