Face Masks For Farmers
posted (April 17, 2020)
ASR/BSI, the millers of sugarcane in the north, is reporting tonight that they've been working with women's groups of the 3 cane farming associations to mass produce over 5,400 face masks for the cane farmers of Corozal and Orange Walk.

The company says that after the Prime Minister's announcement encouraging the use of face masks to reduce the risk of spreading the COVID-19, they secured and provided the materials for these locally-made masks. BSI's Environmental Health and Safety Department approved a sample based on guidelines for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Once that prototype was approved, the women's groups connected to the cane farming associations began mass-production.

Distribution of these masks began yesterday, and each recipient was given a packet containing two, along with guidelines for best use.

A local manufacturer is in the process of producing another 2,000 face masks for all BSI employees. That production was not carried out by the women's groups due to urgency and demand.

The company has also instituted other safety measures for workers, such as checking their temperatures for fevers before they board the company buses to work.
