In crime news, 50-year-old Calla Creek resident Rafael Vasquez was shot in the abdomen and ankle last night, with a third bullet grazing his head. It happened at around 7:00 pm at a farm on the Santa Rosa road. Vasquez was approached by a man who spoke to him in Spanish asking if he could take him to a back road that leads into Guatemala.
Vasquez told the man that he didn't know any back roads, that's when the man got upset, took out a firearm, and fired three shots towards him.
Rafael Vasquez was transported first to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, and later to the Western Regional Hospital for further treatment.
Police later visited the scene where they found a small amount of blood under a shed. Also on the scene were three 9mm expended shells, one 9mm slug, and one 16-gauge cartridge.
