Corona Cases Spike In Chetumal, Mexico Declares Phase 3
posted (April 22, 2020)

Mexico has entered what its government calls "Phase 3" of the spread of the coronavirus, the most serious stage, as transmission of the virus intensifies.

But what does that mean for Belize?

Well, we certainly have to closely watch our neighbor to the north with whom we share cultural and economic ties as well as an extremely porous border.

Mexico has registered 857 coronavirus deaths and 9,501 infections, with 729 new cases reported today.

But the country is focusing on austerity and mitigation measures rather than attempts to extinguish the epidemic. They have also shied away from curfew measures which have been deemed authoritarian.

And in Quintana Roo, a district that in regular circumstances is frequented by 100's of Belizeans every weekend, there have been 426 confirmed cases with 63 cases under investigation. Those are massive numbers in comparison to the 18 cases confirmed in Belize thus far and only serve to indicate that our borders with Mexico won't be opening anytime soon.
