61-year-old Jose Antonio Oliva was killed in a traffic accident on Friday night entering Yo Creek village, Orange Walk. It happened at about 6:45, Oliva had just finished checking a water tank and was riding away from his workplace, when he was knocked down by a pickup truck.

Earlier today CTV3 spoke to Oliva's brother Edwardo who says that his family's only concern now is to give Jose as decent a burial as they can muster in what are troubled times.

Mr. Oliva, Brother of Deceased
"I understand that he was with a friend playing cards when they called him about 4 o' clock or something like that about some water problem they had, so he left them and went home and went to see at the water tank where the problem is he and another guy from the water board. He went and when he was coming back, because he was a responsible person, he wants to see everything in order and when he was turning back about 300 yards from the water tank, this pick up knock him down, but the way they knock him down they won't believe he would die. But he died instantly."

"Did the person who hit him stop and try and assist?"

Mr. Oliva, Brother of Deceased
"We understand that he hit him and fled away from the scene and he returned back to the scene to see what happened and he was going back to San Lazaro, because he lives in Trinidad or somewhere there. He was going and some police officer caught up with him and brought him to the scene. That's what I understand."

"We will miss him, because he was really a person that's active in the village, especially in the water system. He was well known and the village is mourning him, because with this sickness (Covid-19) we cannot have a good funeral."

The driver, German Evan Tillet has been charged for the crime of Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careles conduct, Drove Motor Vehicle without due Care and Attention, Fail to Provide Specimen and Fail to Stop and Render Aid.
