No Sweetheart Pass, How About A Heartbreak Visa?
posted (April 27, 2020)
It has now been 14 days since the last confirmed case of Coronavirus was detected in Belize. Even before that we'd closed our borders, instituted a complete lockdown, and asked many of our citizens with even secondary contacts of San Ignacio and Belize City clusters to self-quarantine.

So, while domestically, there is no appearance of the dreaded virus, that means the only threat from Coronavirus is external - meaning what can come across the border. That threat was personified by 28-year-old Sergio Cabanias over the weekend when he crossed into Belize through an illegal point of entry at Patchakan village.

The police's Corozal business patrol found and detained Cabanias in the village park.

When questioned he told them that he came through Ramonal Savannah in a boat sometime around 6:00pm on the 24th April 2020. And he wasn't looking for a sweetheart pass, but a heartbreak visa.

He told authorities that he'd left Mexico after a rough breakup and didn't wish to return. Cabanias was ultimately escorted to the Northern Border station where he was handed over to immigration authorities.
