COVID Causes Contraband Concerns, Bowen Sales Trending Up
posted (April 28, 2020)
But, sales are modestly trending up in a most unexpected area. That's Orange Walk where a funny thing has happened. The communities along the Rio Hondo are subtly turning against contraband! That's because Quintana Roo has almost 700 cases COVID 19 and people are scared the smugglers bring the virus across. So they are shying away from those products. We asked about the COVID bump in Orange Walk:

Michael Bowen- CEO/president Bowen and Bowen
"That's an interesting question Jules because while our sales are down, if we look at Orange Walk district in particular, the sales are slightly higher than the rest of the country by a trend. They are still down but it then indicates that, something that we always know is here is contraband, but it gives us the first window of opportunity to have a metric and quantify what the potential contraband is. So, we are busy putting that together because contraband not only affects our business but it's also a lost revenue source for the government. So, what we are trying to do is quantify what that contraband is."

Jules Vasquez- channel 7 news reporter
"So, Orange Walk had a Covid bump?"

Michael Bowen
"I would say a Covid bump over the depressed of everybody else. So it's not an increase in sales but if everybody is down 60%, Orange Walk is down by less which is an indicating process that we are filling a gap that wasn't always there."
