Faking Crystal Water
posted (April 28, 2020)
And, we also asked about the funny business with water which was reported to us from one store. It's a widespread practice when water is scarce to fill up crystal bottled with any old thing and sell it at an inflated price. Here's Bowen's answer:

Jules Vasquez- channel 7 news reporter
"This is obviously not Crystal water, you can see from the cap, but because of the strength of the Crystal brand, what the grocer in this case would do is go and fill it up down the street for $2.50 and then put on any old cap on it and then sell that for $6.50 because of the demand and the shortage of supply. So, then he is ripping off you guys, ripping off the consumer and also weekening your brand."

Michael Bowen- CEO/president Bowen and Bowen
"We very diligently to address these items. We try to send cease and dessist orders to some of the refillers. Our concern is that if the bottle is not clean before it is refilled, regardless if the water was good quality or not, you risk contamination and people are going to look at that. Once that cap comes off and it gets put on the cooler, at that point there is nothing really distinguishing the fact that it is not our product. This is why we have to safeguard our brand because a brand is a promise. So, our promise to costumers is quality and that is degradation of our brand it is also infringing on the promise to our costumers that they are not receiving the quality from a product that should be ours."
