Enforcing Mandatory Masks
posted (May 4, 2020)
And doing better for police means cracking down on the catalogue of new offences - that mainly have to do with the mandatory wearing of masks. On Friday it became the law that everyone in a public place, public space, or public office or building must wear a face mask, anyone providing services in a business or office must do the same, and even if you're exercising in the morning, you also have to wear a mask.

It's part of the measures to keep Belize COVID free, but many found the masks oppressive - and on Saturday, police charged 15 persons for "Failure to wear a cloth mask or other face covering whilst in public."

It's a five thousand dollar fine, and, today, the commissioner said that police gave a one day adjustment period on Friday May first:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"On the second day then we began to make arrests for not wearing the masks and yes indeed a few persons were arrested, but may I say that driving through the city and even across the country I have observed that a number of persons are wearing a foreign mask or a chin mask and not wearing a mouth and nose masks. The mask must be covering your mouth and your nose. It should not be on your forehead or on your chin. If it's on your forehead or chin you are in violation of the law and you will be arrested. I know that people are some are ranting and raging on social media about the wearing of masks. I don't like the masks either, but the law is put in place for a reason and it for all of us to comply with. If it is that we want to get ourselves out of this situation as quickly as we can, so please if you don't like the measures, cooperate, comply and pretty soon we should be back to our normal way of life."
