Griga Gangs, Cops Concede Failure
posted (May 4, 2020)
There was another shooting in Dangriga town last night.

At around 8:00, 35 year old Luwany Mena and 62 year old Ernest Mena were at home on their verandah when a gunman hid behind a post and shot them.

Luwany was shot to the right hand and Ernest to the left side of the ankle while the gunman ran off.

The shooting comes 5 days after a couple was shot in the same area of the town.

It's a gang dispute between feuding rival groups that are both trying to take dominance in the town. And, today the Commissioner frankly said it is a failure of policing to not effectively suppress it. He outlined a harsh new plan of action for those who he described as animals living in the community:

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Crimewise Dangriga is our problem and I have been watching and been in dialogue with the southern regional commander to see what is it they are doing in Dangriga why they're not able to get a handle on these two groups that seemingly believe that they own Dangriga. And it would appear to me from a law enforcement standpoint enough is not being done. And so I had another talk this morning with the commander and I have also spoken to Mr. Vidal who is commander of operations and has given directives in terms of what I want to see done in Dangriga to be able to bring some sense of security back to the people of Dangriga. And so they will see some changes in terms of the police approach for these gang members in Dangriga. And we will come down hard on them and those who want to cry foul can cry foul. But when we have people who believe that they can behave like animals and live among us and we must pet them up and pamper them, it is not going to happen. And so today will be the game changer for Dangriga. We must do business better and so to the people of Dangriga your assistance is coming today."
