Belize is COVID Free, But Can We Stay That Way?
posted (May 5, 2020)
For the first time since March 23rd., Belize is free of COVID 19 tonight.

The last two cases have come back with a second negative test, meaning that they have shed the COVID virus. So there are zero cases of COVID-19 in Belize tonight.

And while that may be cause for modest celebration, the call tonight is for caution. Right outside our borders - the numbers are surging up. Guatemala's total up to yesterday was 730 cases with 46 cases in the East of the country, which includes our neighbour Peten.

Meanwhile, Quintana Roo, Mexico is reporting 956 cases, with 24 of those in Chetumal.

So, Belize's COVID free status - gained by tough and timely decision making is truly an accomplishment - but the Director of Health Service es warns that it is a a very fragile one, and he posted, quote, "We need a community effort as we move along to prevent any more cases of COVID-19."

Sunday may 10th will make it 28 days since there has been no positive test, which would mean the outbreak is over. Health experts warns that would only mark the end of a first wave, and there could be other waves of outbreaks to follow - once Belize is not exceedingly careful.
