A Close Response To Distance Learning
posted (May 5, 2020)
The press also took the opportunity to ask the Chief Education Officer about how parents and students countrywide have been embracing the Ministry's attempts at distance learning.

As we told you last week, the Ministry has been producing printed lessons for parents to pick up from grocery stores countrywide. Those who have access to radio can engage in daily lessons that the Ministry has produced. And, if you and your child have access to the internet, the Ministry has uploaded those lessons on their government website for easy downloading.

Dr. Babb was asked if parents have been making use of these learning tools:

Dr. Carol Babb - Chief Education Officer, MOE
"We have different modalities. We are doing online lessons for those who have access to television and radio. We're also hard packages, like actual paper. The same lessons that are online, students can have access to those packages. They will be distributed to every single district, and parents can get them from various locations like major stores, financial institutions, etc."

Reporter
"Have you received and update if families are going to collect, especially the hard copies?"

Dr. Carol Babb
"Yes, we have. Actually, when we didn't have them in Belize City, parents were calling. Parents do want their children to have these packages. They want their children to be engaged at this time."

And keeping it on the topic of education, the Ministry sent out a memorandum today to the management of secondary schools. In it, the Ministry is asking for the relaxation of requirements for the promotion of high school students.

Their memo says, quote, "In an earlier press conference, we informed the general public that Education Rule 128 speaks to the automatic promotion at the primary level. However, at the secondary level, the determination for promotion and graduation is done in accordance with the schools' academic policies and assessment practices. Therefore, the MoE is appealing to Managing Authorities of secondary schools to be reasonable and compassionate at this time by adjusting school policies and practices as necessary. Please give students every opportunity to be promoted and provide the necessary support in the new school year to address weaknesses." End quote.
