PSU and GOB Bickering Over Increments
posted (May 6, 2020)
With a collapsing revenue base and soaring expenses, Government is straining to pay its wage bill - but, still, the Financial Secretary and the PSU can't seem to agree on the way forward with increments which will not be paid this year.

A circular from the Minister of finance at the end of last month proposes the foregoing of all increments for the next fiscal year.

But, the union wants the increments deferred instead for up to 3-5 years.

On Monday, Financial Secretary Joe Waight wrote again to the President of the PSU to ask for the union's support with foregoing the increments.

He warns, quote, "If the PSU still rejects the proposals, please be informed that the (Prime) Minister intends to proceed as follows. He will seek, after hearing from you, to advise His Excellency the Governor General to amend the Public Service Regulations so as to give the Minister the power to alter salaries, emoluments and increments in in order to deal with the current unprecedented situation." End quote.

The union did not have a response today.
