DHS Says "Keep On Truckin'"
posted (May 12, 2020)
But, as we said, neither the trade nor the economy is the first consideration, health is foremost. Belize has no active COVID cases right now - while truckers at the border come from Guatemala, Honduras and Salvador - all countries with active cases.

But, is there an acceptable risk and a middle ground to keep the economic interests going? When we asked the Director of Health Services yesterday on Ask the Experts, he seemed to think so:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Service
"If they are coming in, it has to do with risk, if you're coming in to just deliver and then go back out without any interaction with anybody I don't know that that would be a high-risk activity. It's the constant activity, I'm assuming that these people are also not ill. I don't know that we should, I guess they can come in. I hear what you're saying in terms of what happens up north versus what happens down west but it should be able to happen if people are just coming in to routinely do their delivery and then go back out with limited interaction with the general public. I don't know that that should be a problem as we move along."

We'll keep following the story as the border remains closed to trade traffic tonight.
