Guatemala Gripped By COVID Spike
posted (May 15, 2020)
And, the new normal in Guatemala means something very different than it does Belize. While we are slowly opening up - our neighbour Guatemala is shutting down like never before! After a record 143 new positive cases of the coronavirus appeared yesterday - President Alejandro Giammattei instituted strict lockdown protocols that went into effect this evening.

Basically the country will be completely shutdown from this evening at 5:00 until Monday at 5:00 in the morning. During that time, only essential services will be allowed to operate.

And then, on Monday, the public will only be allowed to move from 5:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the evening, for essential purposes only, and only on foot - no cars or motorbikes.

It's an extreme measure - but an attempt by our western neighbours to immediately halt the spread of the coronavirus which spiked worryingly yesterday. In total, Guatemala has reported 1,518 cases of the Coronavirus, 29 deaths and 129 recoveries.
