COMPOL: Local Gov’t Should Stay Out of Police Work
posted (May 18, 2020)
But when it comes to policing and screening water taxi passengers - Commissioner Williams says that is the job of police, not town constables.

As we told you on Friday, the San Pedro town board had its constables screening persons getting on board the water taxi. An exasperated compol said this is plainly illegal:

Dorian Pakeman, Press Office
"Can you discuss the screening being done for travelers at water taxis, should town board employee be doing this, is that legal?"

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Anyhow I have had that talk with Mr. Noble. The SI did not empower the Town Council to be engaging in any screening. The SI empowered the security forces and I have said to Mr. Noble under no circumstances must any employee of the town council be with the police asking people question as to where they are going, why they are going. They do not have that authority. The information I has received was that in order for people to go to San Pedro or leave San Pedro they need to get some permit or some written permission from the mayor and I said to Mr. Noble if that is happening it must stop immediately, because the SI did not make provision for that. I trust and hope that it's no longer occurring, if it were occurring."
