Copal Black Corn For Farmers
posted (May 19, 2020)
We've been reporting on the wildfires devastating Western and Southern Belize. The drought provided the ideal conditions for agricultural fires set by farmers to get out of hand and destroy huge tracts of forest.

A concerted, community, NGO and government effort got the first out - but as that old 80's song says, "after the fire, the fire still burns." And it's burnt a hole right through the pockets of the farmers in the Toledo district who lost their crops in the blaze.

And that's why the Copal Tree Farm and Distillery outside of Punta Gorda Town is making a generous donation to the communities most affected.

Copal Tree Farm specializes in the production of black corn, which they used to make whisky and rum. But the company is now donating black corn seeds to farmers so that they can replant.

Today, our colleagues from PGTV News tagged along for the handing out of the donations, and they spoke with the donors and the recipient of the seeds.

Here's what they to say about the philanthropic effort by the Copal Tree Farm:

The black corn seeds were delivered to the alcaldes of Colombia Village and farm organizer of Crique Jute village; the two communities which were hardest hit by the wildfires.
