38 Days Covid Free
posted (May 21, 2020)

The extended State of Emergency regulations may have you stir-crazy from being stuck at home for almost 2 months now. Or, maybe you’re tired of the breathing difficulties that come with wearing a face mask all day. But, the good news tonight is that all those self-sacrifices in this new COVID-19 world have helped Belize to reach 38 days and counting with no active coronavirus cases.

This was among the first few talking points for the Ministry of Health officials who returned to the Ask the Experts Webcast to update the nation on ongoing the COVID-19 fight.

Here’s the Director of Health Services discussing this very positive development:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Service
"Well we are now into our day 38 of having confirmed the last 4 cases, since then we have not had any other case. I don't think we have had any highly suspect case. We have been screening anybody who has showing up in the health system can be both public and private that has severe acute respiratory illness or people who have influenza like illnesses. The numbers in both of these are not really that high, we do have cases, we acknowledge that but not really coming to the flu clinic. I was in Corozal and Orange Walk yesterday, San Narcisio as well to see how the flow of those flu clinics go and we are not seeing that high number of cases that we have been seeing at the beginning of the year. Nonetheless we have been continue to do swabbing and testing of samples and certain elements of random sampling has happened."

The latest infographic says that 1,435 COVID tests have been done in Belize, there are no new negatives, and there are 40 cases under investigation. Manzanero said today that testing has now been extended to homes for the elderly.
