Two men are dead under somewhat mysterious circumstances in Hopkins village.
Well - known Belizean tour guide and dive master, 55 year old Quentin Espinoza, and 70 year old American Roman Burley were both found dead at a farm near the Hopkins junction.
Reports at this hour are that they were found at around 9:30, and Espinoza had been shot to the head, while Burley was chopped.
This morning the Compol told the media that it appeared to be related to a land dispute:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"The information is still preliminary but from what I've been briefed police visited a farm near the Hopkins junction on the Hopkins road and there they found the body of a male person with chop wounds. The person has since been pronounced dead and investigators are on the scene currently trying to establish what may have happened."
"They have found, they initially found one body and it appeared to be that of a Caucasian person believed to be of an American national and in searching the area in the bushes they came across a second body of one Quentin Espinoza who is from that area and he had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head police are still in the area combing. Preliminary information at this time suggests that there was some land issue apparently there was surveying happening within the area and the owner of the land who appeared to be the Caucasian had some issues with some persons who were opposing the surveying and some threats were received."
"We will do what needs to be done with a view to establish who were those persons issuing the threats and to see if they have any connection whatsoever to the murders of the two individuals."
We'll have more on this as the story develops.
