City Mayor Says Open Sesame
posted (May 26, 2020)
Belize City's Mayor Bernard Wagner has had his back to the wall for months. The council went in half-pay in April, and since the quarantine measures have been slightly rolled back, the Mayor has been trying to get the council's finances back to some kind of normalcy.

But, with some quarantine measures still in effect, it's been choking the cash-strapped council's revenue stream.

Today - at another event - the mayor who has become very impatient said - that business is the lifeblood of the City and pleaded with the task force to bring the City back to life:

Bernard Wagner- Mayor of Belize City
"So, we are optimistic but we need the relevant authorities to begin to see that the pandemic, while you want to be cautious you have to begin to open back business. What is business in a city if it is not functioning? And we need our city to begin to reopen up. We need to see life back in a city. Our city is nothing without life, without the business activity. And many of the business owners in our city are struggling. We can't allow this to continue any further. We have gone 45 days without any new case and that clearly, that is telling you something, that is telling you a story. And I hope that the oversight committee will begin to look seriously at reopening back the business so that we can get back to the business of the people."

Later on in the news, you'll hear the Mayor talk about how the council's employees still are not back to full pay.
