And then there was another execution at midday today. This happened
right outside Belmopan, when the driver was killed by one of his
passengers. Again, there was no robbery - just a fatal shot to the
head.
With footage from our colleagues at PLUS TV - Cherisse Halsall has this
report:
Oscar Vasquez’s busito sat parked in the middle of the road just at about
12:35 today.
Police found the 29 year old Vasquez slumped over the steering wheel dead,
with a single gunshot to the head.
Best information is that he had been shot by a man who flagged down the
taxi-van, got in, and sat in the back seat - immediately behind Vasquez.
He fired three shots at him and then dashed into the bushes as the van came
to a stop.
It’s a tragic and unbelievable end for his family - which round out the
terrible news at the hospital:
Voice of Brother in Law of deceased
"We rushed over to the hospital but by the time we arrived at the
emergency, we were met by a couple officers who asked us for
particulars and of course, they basically indicated - I read on the
paper, deceased and the minute he wrote Oscar Vasquez, we basically
knew it was very grim news that we'd be getting."
The family says this was no robbery, just plain murder:
Voice of Brother in Law of deceased
"We know definitely it was not an accident, we know that is not a
robbery apparently none of his personal effects have been taken, it's
truly devastating to go through this right now. He's going to be missed
and of course, we do hope that whosoever did this is found to be
brought to justice."
For this family, the loss of a provider and a man who was reforming himself
is too much:
Voice of Brother in Law of deceased
"Everybody in life we have challenges and he's really been taking the
betterment of the last several years to improve his life, to look after
his mom, look after my daughter, look after his daughter. He was really
dedicated to his family, we can't express our deepest condolences to
his daughter because she's devastated right now."
They say he had gotten threats and hope the public can help find the
killers:
Reporter
"Did Oscar ever complain of anybody threatening his life or any sort of
conflict he had recently?"
Voice of Brother in Law of deceased
"To our knowledge, they might be at least 2 persons who’ve had issues
in the past but that never escalated to much and so, we're working with
the police to see if they can follow those leads as well. We're asking
the public if they've seen anything to say something and definitely
cooperate with the police who have had shed some light on what they
believe may have happened but we know with the public's cooperation, a
very good result can come out of this case."
