But, this weekend Central America actually had bigger problems than COVID 19. At least 17 people were killed by Tropical Storm Amanda, which made landfall Sunday.

Two deaths were reported in Guatemala and in El Salvador, 15 people died, 7 are missing and more than 2,000 people were placed in emergency shelters.

Footage from El Salvador showed that streets turned into rivers, overturning cars and stacking them up like toys. The Tropical Storm quickly dissipated over land, but the system also brought heavy rainfall across the region into Belize as well. The city of Belmopan saw fast rising waters on Saturday.

And going forward, there could still be more coming from this system: the National Hurricane Center said areas from northwest Nicaragua and Belize to the Mexican states of Quintana Roo, Campeche, Chiapas and Oaxaca could see 5 to 10 inches of rain later this week.

The hydrological service warns that the RIO HONDO at Blue Creek continues to rise and is in flood stage, while the NEW RIVER is approaching bank full stage. On the BELIZE RIVER, Banana Bank continues to rise slowly. The CROOKED TREE LAGOON is below the causeway and shows a steady rise. At Double Run, levels are steadily rising.

In the south, the SITTEE RIVER at Kendal Bridge is slowly rising, while the RIO GRANDE is normal but slowly rising.
