BDF Sergeant Charged For Rape Of Female Soldier
posted (June 3, 2020)
For the past two nights we have been reporting on the now concluded report into allegations of sexual misconduct within the BELIZE DEFENCE FORCE.

When we spoke to the Minister of National Security yesterday he disclosed that the report also unearthed an allegation of rape made by a female soldier.

And, today, 35 year old Staff Sergeant Margarito Pop was taken to court and accused of raping a 39 year old female soldier.

Pop appeared before Magistrate Emmerson Banner in the presence of his attorney, Leeroy Banner where a single charge of rape was read to him.

Allegations are that on April 21, 2020 he raped the woman BDF whilst in the Price Barracks BDF compound. The victim reported to police that on Monday, April 20, at about 1:00 in the afternoon, she was at the Sergeant's Mess drinking Guinness with Pop. A few minutes later, a female friend of hers arrived and she started to take shots of Campari. When she'd had enough, she told her female friend to take her to her room, which is located on the compound. She says her friends pulled the door but didn't lock it.

And hours later at 3:00 the next morning, she woke up and felt someone raping her. When she turned around, she claims she saw it was Sergeant Pop.

No plea was taken since it will be heard in the Supreme Court, and Pop was offered bail of $5,000 dollars, which he met. Pop's next court date is set for August 7 2020.

The Sergeant is a 14 year veteran of the Force and the father of two. His attorney refused comment citing the sensitive nature of the case.

No details were given of the rape allegation covered in the investigation of misconduct at the BDF, so we cannot say if this is the case covered in the report.
