He Killed His Ex’s Husband
posted (June 10, 2020)
Tonight, we open with the vicious murder of San Ignacio resident Robert Hurley, a man killed in what police are calling a jealous rage. He was attacked just after midnight by his common-law wife's ex.

Hurley and Evans fought off this familiar attacker - with whom they had been socialising just hours earlier - but they were overpowered, she wounded, and he, fatally stabbed to the chest while her two kids slept in a nearby bedroom. Cherisse Halsall has the story of a bizarre and deadly love triangle.

American national Robert Hurley was killed last night in a sensational domestic dispute at his home. This morning his neighbors were still struggling to recover from the shock of his brutal killing and the midnight call for help that they'll never forget.

Voice of: Deborah Segura, Neighbor
"It was like after 12:00 she came knocking on my window screaming and said they just killed Mr. Robert Hurley and I said what, what, right now off guarded, she caught me."

"She knew that we were friends, right so if anything she could come up here to hail so that's what she did last night. She said call the police, please, please call the police. I didn't know what to do I moved around and moved around until I found the phone to call. They told me to stay on the phone to direct them and that's what happend."

Meshack Eriah, Neighbor
"I know he man almost 19 years since I've been here. He was a good man. I really was surprised to hear that the man has been killed he was a good man that didn't give any trouble. He could have a little bit of drink that's it he didn't bug anyone so it was sad to hear that the man was killed."

It seems that while Hurley and his common law wife had been on and on for the better part of a decade she had only recently moved in full time.

Meshack Eriah, Neighbor
"There was a time she used to come and go, she's come for a few days and leave then last like several weeks ago I have been hearing that she's been there."

Deborah Segura, Neighbor
"So far I think the young gyal she came for the weekend with the man and they were asleep, they were sleeping because it was already after 12. As you could see right, I mean the way she came here the way she was nude."

And while the neighbors struggle with the reality of a brutal murder taking place in their midst, the police are struggling to understand the intricacies of the living arrangement that could best be described as a powder keg.

Henry Jemmott, Superintendent
"Initial reports into the matter reveal that mr. Hurley, Robert Hurley is the resident of the house and his common law, at the time was one, Ms. Shelldine Evans. They were socializing in the house also present downstairs was her ex-common law which is one Mr. David Alex Valencia. He had been working at the residence as a handyman assisting around the yard. The night in question the two, the couple had retired to their room and he was left downstairs. Sometime around 10, 10:30 there about he made his way upstairs where he attacked Mr. Hurley. Seeing this the common law tried to intervene where she sustained a cut wound as well after which he then inflicted the wounds and made good his escape from the location. He took along with him one of his 9 year old daughters while he was leaving. Police went into the area, we processed the scene we did further search of the area and we maintained police vigilance within that area until daybreak."

It's a shocking crime, made even more so because it happened in the presence of children. What is fortunate, however, is that police have managed to apprehend the prime suspect and recover his young daughter.

Henry Jemmoth, Superintendent
"Sometime around 5:30 6:00 we were checking the buses and we then checked one of the bus and we found to the rear of the bus Mr. David and his daughter inside the bus. He was then detained pending investigation of a stabbing incident and also murder. Since then we have been getting information and putting together our investigation and from what we're looking at we think that the motive might be jealousy and more than likely it's jealousy we're looking at and maybe the female might have still had a relationship with both men."

Also recovered, the most essential piece of evidence and what police will prove the key to closing this most disturbing of cases.

Henry Jemmott, Superintendent
"We then did our interviews and we found out the location of the weapon so at about 9:30 this morning we returned to the area at mile 68 and we searched the bushy lot in front of the entrance of the building and we recovered a knife a shine knife which had it looked like blood stains on it. At this time we have persons of interest in custody we are recording statements after which we will send the file to the DPP to confirm if we will charge and what the charges are that we'll be laying."

The DPP has recommended that the accused be charged for murder.

Police didn't remove Hurley's body until around 3 a.m. by that time his common-law wife had fled the scene in search of one of her daughters, leaving the other in tears at the scene. Police found that daughter with the accused, David Valencia - and that child is now in the care of the social services department.

Of note is that the accused lived downstairs of his ex - while she lived with her new partner upstairs in an open air bedroom.
