Does Belize Need A Gov’t With a Fresh Mandate?

Suspending the informal cattle trade was one of the tough and unpopular decisions the government was forced to make during the COVID crisis. And, almost a full five years into its third term - government often gains legitimacy for its difficult COVID decisions by looking to the bipartisan national oversight committee. But, a new government with a fresh mandate might not have to do that. Briceno says that's what Belize needs:

"Absolutely agree with you and that's quite a feat that I agree with you right now that really this government is coming to its end of its term and we are facing the most serious economic crisis this country has ever had before Independence and after Independence and there is some very important decisions some are going to be tough, but some of them also are going to have serious implication in the years to come and the decent thing that what any government should do including the United Democratic Party government should do is to be able to call the elections and for them either to get a fresh mandate or not."
