Chetumal’s COVID Spike

Belize went on a 53-day streak without any active coronavirus cases until last week Friday when Patient #19 was confirmed. And then yesterday, Patient #20 was detected in the south.

Mexico, our neighbor to the north, is having a completely different experience. Their number of confirmed cases continues to rise. The latest global snapshot indicates that just over 124 thousand cases have been confirmed in that country.

Press reports out of that country are that there has been a spike in the number of cases in Othón P. Blanco. Viewers may be aware that the municipal seat of Othón P. Blanco is Chetumal, which is also the border Mexican City that Belizeans visit the most.

The Red Cross has had to help health authorities set up tents on the compound of the General Hospital to provide doctors with hospital infrastructure to cope with the increasing number of patients.

Yesterday, during his appearance on Ask the Experts, Dr. Manzanero was asked about Mexico's active COVID problem and its implications for Belize. Here's his answer to that inquiry:
