FCD Asseses May Fire Impact
We've been reporting on the massive fires in the Vaca and Chiquibul
Forests in May. Well, a study conducted by the Friends for Conservation
and Development titled,
A Remote Sensing Damage Analysis of the Chiquibul Forest Impacted
by the 2020 Forest Fires,
reveals that alone in three protected areas, namely the Vaca Forest
Reserve, Caracol Archaeological Reserve and Chiquibul National Park a
total area coverage of 22,227.33 acres was engulfed and impacted by
forest fires. The extent of this damage on broadleaf forests had never
been registered before in recent times - according to a release.
The Vaca Forest Reserve (VFR) was affected the most by the 2020 forest
fires. In this reserve, a total of 14,010.88 acres representing 34.7%
of the reserve was impacted. In the Vaca many of these fires were
started deep within the reserve, notably by farmers operating inside or
near the reserve in Belize. The fires across the landscape were
primarily started due to agricultural farming. The losses on
biodiversity are difficult to quantify, but species of plants, trees
and wild animals were heavily impacted. The health risks were also of
high concern for residents in the Cayo District. A survey conducted on
13 farmers in the Vaca region shows that losses on crops, pastures and
fences went over Bz$100,000.00.
