Briceno Backs Off From Oversight Cmte.
posted (June 12, 2020)
PUP Leader John Briceno has resigned as co - chair of the National Oversight Committee. He did so on Wednesday in a letter to the Prime Minister. And he was supposed to announce it at a press conference that same day - but he never said in there that he was actually resigning!

He opened the virtual press conference with a reflection on his service to the Committee, which he has co chaired along with the Prime Minister since it was formed in mid March.

Hon. John Briceno, PUP Leader
"I am fully satisfied that the People's United Party's presentation on the Nation al Oversight Committee and on the other committees contributed significantly to our country's successful efforts to contain the Corona virus. I am proud of my party's participation in this national effort and I thank all those who gave so selflessly of their time, energy and ideas."

But, while it sounded like he a farewell, incredibly, he never actually said that he was stepping down. He just kind of danced around the issue, so no one even knew!

But, indeed, he has and it makes the end of the historic - and highly effective - bi partisan effort to keep COVID 19 from causing a health crisis in Belize.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Briceno says "As the country faced the global pandemic of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) it was imperative that both government and opposition work together for the benefit of all Belizeans. Fully satisfied that we have contributed to the best of our ability and with Cabinet and the CEO caucus making final determination on all issues I believe it is now time for me to return to my full- time duties as Leader of the Opposition." End quote. Government has not indicated if a new co - chairperson will be named.
