Gas Station By The Sea
posted (June 12, 2020)
If you're a regular visitor to Punta Gorda you'll know the joy and wonder of the salty sea breeze on your face as you roll through the curve to enter the town. It's a welcoming experience that could shift as seaside restaurants and quaint hotels are replaced by something a bit more practical.

That's because Belize's southernmost town is set to receive a new gas station. The trouble is it's proposed location at a prized location. Cherisse Halsall has the story thanks to footage courtesy PGTV.

7News reached out to Department Of the Environment CEO Percival Cho for comment. He confirmed that the land in question was legally transferred to its new owners and says that by the looks of things the DOE and the Fire department have done what was required of them. He says the Fire service inspected the site and gave no objection while the DOE report of the site confirmed all required distances to the property line and nearest house were met.

And in regards to the community member's environmental concerns the Department of the Environment has recommended underground tanks only that must be enclosed in concrete catchments that are 110% the volume of the tanks in the event of spills.
