Wesley Finds A Way
posted (June 16, 2020)
In the last few weeks, many primary and high school seniors have found out what graduations are like in a pandemic. For many they're non-existent but others are pulling them off with a little planning and a whole lot of ingenuity. And this morning as "Pomp and Circumstance" blared out of Wesley Methodist church, four groups of high school seniors got to celebrate their graduation. We peeked in and asked the principal how they managed to hold the celebration while social distancing:

Joan Tillett, Principal, Wesley
"We decided to divide our students into groups and then allow them to invite two parents. The first group we did all our honor students, the top students in the class, and then the other groups thereafter based on where they lived. Those in rural Belize went second and then we mixed up the others."

Cherisse Halsall:
"So what has the response been like from the parents and the students?"

Joan Tillett, Principal, Wesley
"Excellent, Excellent, because we give a token at the end of the ceremony and our boxes are empty. So we can say so far we even have more than 100 percent of what we had planned yesterday. Because we had to add other tokens to some boxes. We have two more groups because we have a group of 150. So we did four groups today and we'll do the last two groups tomorrow."

Cherisse Halsall:
"Was there a point where you thought, these graduations can't go ahead?"

Joan Tillett, Principal, Wesley
"Never did, never did because once you begin to think about obstacles you won't come up with solutions. You just look at a challenge and decide, how can I overcome it?"

4 back to back graduation ceremonies were held today with two more planned for tomorrow.
