It's back to school in August but with many families reeling from the COVID-19 financial crisis it could be a struggle to afford tuition. And while corporate and bank scholarships forthcoming one Belizean expatriate is giving back by investing in education. Roman Palma, a Belizean businessman living in the state of Illinois, says he's been supporting students for years currently providing full scholarships for several at Mopan Technical High School. This year he's taking on 10 new scholars in an effort to give back to Belizeans who need the help. This afternoon he spoke to Krem news with details of how to apply.

"Covid-19 it has impacted a lot of us, a lot of families and especially back home. So I know how hard it is, I know how difficult its going to be for some families, that lost their jobs, they have their kids and they pay their tuitions and school is coming up in the next couple of weeks, so I have always been helping kids, different organizations, so this was like a perfect thing that I am going to be doing helping other kids pay their tuitions since their families cant pay for it. I decided that I'm going take 10 more students full scholarships for it could be 1st form, 2nd form, 3rd form or 4th form, it could be any 10 students. The only thing that they have to do is write a small essay, something very short saying why I should help them, a small video or something and also the information of the high school that they will be attending. Once we do the vetting we pick the 10 recipients and we automatically confirm with you further done the line."

I am a Belizean first and will always be a Belizean and that's the reason why I know how hard it is and that's the reason why I am willing to help my Belizean people."
