And "as soon as possible" is how soon some US citizens are wanting to
get back to Belize.
Gilges discussed the tourism inquiries his embassy has been getting:
Jules Vasquez
"What do you think is the appetite for tourism in the US market?
Because opening the airport and opening it to flights is one thing but
having people willing to fly at this fragile and unpredictable time in
the world is another thing altogether.
Keith R. Gilges - Charge d'Affaires, US Embassy to Belize
"What I can say is that the inquiries we got for a long time were about
Covid, when can I leave, are there flights coming up. What we are seeing
now is increased inquiries to our counsellor section, from Americans
saying, when can I come to Belize? When can I fly in? It is because they
are interested in the tourism opportunities here. They are interested in
travel. It is summer in the US, the folks are saying, hey we want to go
somewhere and Belize has been an incredibly popular destination for
American tourists. So those increases are coming in, people want to come.
But again, that's up to the government to say, how can we restart tourism?
Just like restaurants in the United States. How do you restart all those
businesses in a way that doesn't prolong or respike cases of Covid. I don't
have an answer but I can tell you when tourism starts up again you are
going to see a lot of Americans coming here."
