The Meaning of Garina Jahz
posted (June 19, 2020)
Sunday is Father's Day, and a group of Belizean musicians from the Garina Jahz Band has organized a concert to celebrate Belizean dads. They say that they want to do something pleasant for honorable men, whose sacrifices to look after their children can sometimes go unnoticed.

This evening, the organizer and one of his fellow musicians told us via zoom why you'll be able to enjoy the music, even if you aren't a dad. Here's that conversation:

Richard Pitts - Organizer
"My name is Richard Pitts, and I am the founder of the Garina Jahz Band. The band plays music that's a fusion between Garifuna genres, whether it be paranda, punta, along with jazz. We'll be doing a show this Sunday, on Channel 7, starting at 6 p.m."

"The nature of the show is to promote the Garifuna music, of course, fused contemporary genres. Fathers Day is normally one of those days that's not as - well, it is stereotyped as one of those days that is not as important as Mother's Day, and we want to show homage to fathers because, at the end of the day, fathers are the breadwinner. So, while there might be deadbeat fathers around, we want to highlight good father, and the strength of the Garifuna music, particularly, especially with the drumming, is founded upon strong men, and strong musicians."

Houston Alvarez - Bass Drummer, Garina Jahz Band
"That has certainly been something throughout the years, from way back then, it's always about the mother. Along with Mr. Pitts, we the band members, are supportive in whatever we do, as a band, and he saw it very fitting for us to have an entire show for the fathers. I know it will be live-streamed here on Channel 7."

The Concert will be live-streamed right here on Channel 7 on Sunday, starting at 6 p.m.
