Experts Warn COVID Will Come From Across Borders
posted (June 23, 2020)
From the Ministry of Health's perspective, the detection of positive cases through the repatriation program is not a threat to public health, since it is a controlled process, which limits the public's exposure.

But what health officials continue to be very concerned about are border jumpers, who do all they can to elude authorities. That's why the Director and his team are keeping a close eye on the fight against the coronavirus happening in Mexico and Guatemala.

This afternoon, Dr. Marvin Manzanero said that the increasing number of confirmed cases in these two countries is cause for serious concern:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services
"Ther are in two situations that we are following neighboring Othon P. Blanco, where is the municipality where Chetumal is found. Up to twelve midday today had reported a total of four hundred and three cases with two hundred and forty-nine of those being active. And they are having an average of 6.2% case fatality rate, so that is based on the amount of people they have identified. Guatemala in their report earlier today talks about a potential crumbling of the health system if the numbers continue to escalate at the rate they have been in the last couple of weeks. They reported a total and this keeps changing. By the time I got here I had already had to update this figure 3 times, 13,769 cases is what Guatemala has with 547 deaths related to COVID-19."

We'll have a little bit more from today's Ask the Experts session later in the news.
