Shyne Fending Off Smear Campaign
posted (June 23, 2020)
Last night, we showed you how UDP's Shyne Barrow is contributing to the work of the Police and the Conscious Youth Development Program to encourage peace between George Street and Taylors Alley gangs.

That conversation gave us the opportunity to ask Barrow about an American woman who has been blasting him on Facebook for allegedly misappropriating money.

She's Amy Thomas, a resident of Hawaii. She says that she has visited Belize multiple times to do humanitarian outreach work. Thomas claims that in 2017, she gave Shyne $7,500 US dollars, which was supposed to go toward a resource center, just like the one Barrow currently is operating on Amara Avenue.

She claims that he never accounted for the funds she donated.

She has attacked Barrow's credibility and accused him of dishonesty.

In her post, she says, quote, "Where did the $7,500 USD go that was for the MESOPOTAMIA residents? …I feel sad for the residents of Mesopotamia because that money could have put 40+ children through school for a year, built a home for a family in need, etc." End quote.

The general elections are due to be called in a few month's time, and so, Barrow isn't allowing her accusation to go unchallenged. He has initiated legal action against her for defamation.

In a letter sent to her last Tuesday, Barrow's attorney says quote, "Those statements are untrue, and they constitute a serious libel for which our client is entitled to claim damage for the harm to his reputation."

But the Facebook post is still out there, and generating that social media buzz. When we asked him yesterday about the amount of attention this post is getting, he told us that Thomas intentionally attacked him for political reasons:

Barrow says that he will press on with his defamation lawsuit against Thomas.
