St. Matthew’s Road History
posted (June 26, 2020)
The Ministry Of works is defending contractor Imer Hernandez against a series of social media smears that have cast him as the man responsible for the collapse of the culvert at St. Matthews Village on the George Price Highway.

And this morning in a press release the Ministry attempted to clear up some false narratives that have been circulating on social media and elsewhere, saying quote: "The intense rains countrywide, exacerbated by the negative impacts of deforestation, contributed to the failure of the crossing known as St. Matthew's Bridge." End quote.

They discussed the issue of the culverts which according to the Ministry had not been recently replaced but were well over 40 years old by the time they were overwhelmed. And the release adds that section of the George Price Highway hadn't been rehabilitated in 12 years

Finally, they referred to a recent Road Safety Project carried out along that portion of the highway which entailed the widening of road shoulders, placement of road signs, safety barriers, bus lay-bys, road markings, and the resurfacing of a slippery portion of the road. And while four local contractors participated in that project none of them were Imer Hernandez.
