Post Curfew Policing
posted (June 30, 2020)
The state of emergency ends at midnight tonight - but the curfew is still in effect for 10:00 pm tonight. The odd part is that you have to go indoors at 10:00, but, if you're that type you can then come back out at midnight - 'cause there's no more curfew.

IT's an idle example, but, it's also an illustration of how tough enforcement has been for police where the rules of social living are constantly changing. Today the Commissioner discussed the challenges:

Jules Vasquez- Reporter
"Please speak about the mindset of the police department and the senior command as it heads into this next new phase and how it plans to keep itself motivated and enforcing the law."

Chester Williams- Commissioner of Police
"You are right Jules, it has been an exhausting four months dealing with this issue of the Coronavirus or the threat thereof. Now that the SOE is coming to an end we will see the ushering of a new statutory instrument which will be signed by either the Minister of Health or the director of Health Services that will maintain certain measures in place, as you rightly mentioned, the masks and the social distancing. But at the end of the day Jules, people continue to wear their mask like this [pulls mask below nose], like this [pulls mask below mouth], some like this [pulls mask over forehead]. Those are improper and when the police sees you, the police will be acting lawfully if they arrest you. So, please, I humbly beg my people to wear your mask properly. I will be sending out a memo today to police officers, again, telling them of the laps of the state of emergency and what I expect from them going forward in enforcing our core police functions as well as the other provisions that will be in the new SI that will come out. Again, I will remind them to still as best as they can try and be more descretionate in the enforcing of the masks regulation. Especially for people who may be asthmatic or persons who may travel with sharpness. We could try and see how we could compromise in certain circumstances."
