PUP Pol Charged For Failing To Give Sample, Denies Drinking & Driving
posted (July 1, 2020)
PUP Standard Bearer for Belmopan Oscar Mira appeared in Belmopan Magistrate's Court today where he was arraigned for one count of failure to provide a specimen.

The charge goes back to an accident on Friday night. Mira was driving on the George Price Highway and rear-ended a car that was allegedly parked on the road, in the lane of oncoming traffic. A police Corporal was allegedly asleep behind the wheel.

Mira says the car was an accident waiting to happen - and that it had been reported to police by another driver earlier on.

But, Mira put himself into hot water when he did not provide a blood or urine sample which is usually required of drivers involved in accidents. A driver is free to refuse but he or she must face a charge - and that's what Oscar Mira went to court for today: a single count of failure ot provide a specimen.

Before his courtroom appearance, he told PLUS TV that the charge is simply a smear on his good political name.

Oscar Mira
"First of all I think that this charge on my person is just to tarnish my image and my person here in Belmopan. I don't believe that there is any merit. It's going to court I will be charge, I haven't been charge as yet and we will defend it vigorously."

Reporter
"You failed to provide specimen because you were in fact under the influence, some can argue that."

Oscar Mira
"This will be reveal in court. There are specific instances where you should ask for a specimen and all of this will come out in court. I can categorically say that I was not drunk, I was not drinking and the evidence will be presented in court and I am very sure that I will be exonerated on these charges. This is no more and nothing less than a political witch hunt and I am not going to stand for it, I am going to stand tall."

Today in court, Mira was represented by Anthony Sylvester. He pleaded not guilty, received bail of five hundred dollars and will re-appear in court on September third. Mira could still face other charges relating to the traffic accident if he is found to be at fault.
