Positive COVID Test For Honduran Fisher Causes Concern In South
posted (July 1, 2020)
On Friday we told you about the Honduran border jumper who became Covid case #24 for Belize. He's one from that group of three fishermen we told you about earlier in the month. They were caught on the night of June the sixth in a group of three fishing illegally at the Gladden Spit marine reserve.

At the time, the Director of Health services said all three fishers would be tested immediately and at the end of their 14 day quarantine. We don't know went wrong after that, but somehow his positive test came up on June 26th, which is almost 21 days after he was first caught.

And so, now, public health workers are on a contact tracing exercise to test all persons he may have come in contact with. This starts with the marine rangers from SEA, the Southern Environmental Alliance and other security personnel who detained him on the sea. We know SEA personnel have been swabbed and quarantined as a precaution.

But, what about Placencia police? The three men were taken to the Placencia police station on the night of their arrest and then later transferred to the quarantine centre at the Chiste Garcia stadium in Dangriga.

So, there are now also concerns for the 22 police officers at that station - because the fishermen - including patient 24 were there - we are told - for at least 12 hours. As far as we know, none of these officers have been swabbed or quarantined. We'll keep following up.
