War Over Land in Valley Of Peace
posted (July 1, 2020)
Back in March of this year, we took you an area near the Valley of Peace Village in the Cayo District. That's where there was a brewing land dispute between farmers of that village and the American owned, large-scale grain agribusiness called Valley of Peace Farms.

This company has titles for over 11,000 acres of farmland near the community, but within these thousands of acres, more than 50 farmers from Valley of Peace are claiming to have leases for, or rights over several hundred acres, that should be owned by the company.

But, both sides strongly feel that they have rights to the land, and it has been a source of ongoing tension for several years now.

That's until March of this year, when the two sides went to the Ministry of Natural Resources, as the administrator of all lands in the country, for a peaceful out-of-court resolution.

They had arrived at a temporary understanding, while they carry out negotiations to resolve this land fight. But, the dispute flared up last week, when 4 farmers broke the terms of the temporary fix. The company's executives say that these farmers started incurring into farmland that they want to start planting on. Rather than risking a violent confrontation, the company intended to get a court order to remove them.

They called a press conference today and invited representatives of the farmers to listen in and give their input. It was an unusual event, since the two sides were allowed to present their case, and rebut each other points and counterpoints in real-time. Our news team attended, and Daniel Ortiz reports:

You'll definitely notice that the two sides were attempting to be civil and respectful to the other since they are in agreement that this problem was most likely caused by duplication of documents at the Lands Department.

There was a moment during the press conference when the two sides discovered a lease for a farmer, and a title belonging to the company, for the same parcel of farmland. Here's how that happened:

Both sides intend to bring pressure on the Lands Department for a meaningful resolution to this dispute over lands. They are hoping for results before the end of this year.
