Community Leaders In a Disaster
posted (July 2, 2020)

This morning, the Belize City Council's City Emergency Management Organization welcomed 28 new civilian volunteers into their disaster response network for the City.

For several months the Belize Red Cross has been training them to become disaster management coordinators in their communities. The idea behind the program is that in the event of some sort of emergency situation, of residents from the Collet, Jane Usher Boulevard, and Lake Independence neighbourhoods, can contact their neighbours to act as first responders, instead of waiting for the traditional emergency organizations to arrive.

The trained volunteers today received certificates of appreciation, and equipment from Belize Red Cross as part of their formal recognition as disaster response personnel. 7News attended that ceremony this morning, and here's what the Deputy Mayor had to say about bolstering of the city's emergency network:

All of the civilian volunteers have received the necessary certification to take on their new roles as disaster management personnel.
