Thinking Beyond a Southside SOE
posted (July 7, 2020)
As we showed you at the top of the news, 99 suspected gangsters are off the jail, and more are being sought. But, while the Southside state of emergency is a quick fix to create peace, it is not and could never be a long term solution for Southside crime - which is caused by structural poverty and violence.

Today the Commissioner and the AG spoke about some alleged gangsters who were locked up the first time around and seemed to have gotten the message - so were spared this time. But, then there is the issue of long term containment of crime and lawlessness. Here's that:

Chester Williams- Commissioner of Police
"We need to be fair to those who were in prison before in the first state of emergency. And since then they came out and they are truly walking a straight line and working with CYDP and brother Nuri and Ms. Deborah Seawell from Love Foundation and Francisco Woods. So there are a number of people who are dealing with these young men. And we are seeing some changes from them. So, we are given them that opportunity to continue to make that change. But those who continue to show that criminal propensity, and do not want to fall in line but instead want to be violent, hunting or preying on other people, recklessly shooting at women and children, we cannot have those people among us."

Michael Peyrefitte- Attorney General
"We will have to determine what we can do or say to some of these young men or do for them to prevent them from wanting to commit these crimes and to commit these horrible acts in the city and in the country over all. And we will have to decide how we can prevent people who have their minds set on committing these acts of terror."

And while MAKING those arrests the cops also seized gang evidence including drugs, weapons, and ammunition.
