Two days ago, we told you about the Southside state of emergency -
which was launched at 3:00 on Tuesday morning in simultaneous raids all
across the southside. Police detained 99 persons, and all of them faced
the possibility of being locked up at the Hattieville Prison for a
month. In the last State of Emergency, 130 alleged gangsters were held
for 30 days.
Well, this time, it's far less. Of the 99 detained, police sent up only
24 of them today - this includes four females. The Commissioner of
Police explained why at a press conference today.
Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police
"The anti gang task force and the gsu are going the list sieving out
those who we don't think need to be going over this time. Like I said,
we want to be fair to people, if it is that they are not a part of what
is happening causing the havoc in our streets, then we don't want to
capture them at this time. We're going to give them that opportunity to
continue to do the good things that they are doing and I think that so
far, our list of persons who are expected to go to prison today,
because the minister is going to sign the detention orders very shortly
and those persons will be a total of 27 persons, there are still a few
persons on the list of persons that need to go to prison, who are a
part of what is happening but we have not had them in custody. So we're
still working on apprehending some of them. We are going to put out
those wanted posters today like we did the last time and seek the
public's assistance in locating them. If it is that they are in a crab
hole, we are going to dig them out, where ever they go, we are going to
find them. They found some yesterday in a hotel in Belama, we found
some in Cayo, some of them have fled the city but like I said, if they
go in a sewage, we will flush them out, we will find them."
We note that the Commissioner referred to 27 headed for jail, but we
know that 24 were in the police mobiles which left Queen Street for the
prison this evening. As you can see in this video, one of the young
females is crying in the back seat of the Wingle, while her mother says
on the side that they are chancing her child.
