Last night, we showed you how the Public Service Union came up big in
its out-of-court settlement with the Belmopan City Council. The union
has to give up their hilltop property that they had grown attached to
over almost 2 decades. But, in exchange, they will get full title to an
alternative piece of land, valued at around $475,000, and the council
will even assist them with equipment and assistance to build their new
headquarters.
Well, the Union's President is announcing that he and the executive
have signed another agreement which should provide relief to public
officers, in their daily commute between Belize City and Belmopan for
work. The PSU has entered an MOU with the bus company, ADK Charters.
Among other agreed terms, ADK Charters will provide bus services to
union beneficiaries at agreed hours between Belize City to Belmopan and
back, with stops in the Mile 8 community, and Hattieville Village, if
requested. They will do so at a discounted price of $5 per passenger,
instead of the regular $6, that other public transportation providers
charge. Each union member must join the Public Officers Commuters Club,
and pay a membership fee of $20 per year.
In exchange, the union is expected to inform its membership of the
service and its rules and encourage them to commit to the opportunity
for their benefit. The Union will also advertise ADK's services on its
web page and any other media which the PSU is associated with. The
Union must also provide ADK Charter with the first option to provide
charter buses for the PSU, whenever there is any need for a mass
mobilization of its members.
At 1 dollar less, it's a small savings per run, but in a time of where
there is a need to pinch every penny, they get to save approximately
$520 per year.
