Finally tonight, Belize has received $97,000 USD in funding to leverage
sustainable climate finance from the Green Climate Fund. The funding
comes through the UNDP's EnGenDER project which focuses on enhancing
climate resilience, gender equality, and inclusion for vulnerable and
marginalized populations.
The funding is aimed at strengthening the country's disaster risk
management system while building resilience to climate change and it's
meant to combat losses to the agricultural sector, an industry that is
more important than ever as tourism struggles.
But it's not just saving crops to meet our quotas because UNDP research
shows that countries like Belize can be hit particularly hard by
climate change with vulnerable populations including women being most
affected. In a release announcing the award, the UNDP said quote:
"Women, girls, and vulnerable populations are on the front lines of
these crises and often suffer the most and are affected
disproportionately, with devastating social and economic consequences
that include rising rates of gender-based violence."
