No Bail for Border Jumper
posted (July 10, 2020)
And one of those border jumpers who was arrested and charged for entering Belize illegally tried to get bail today. 23-year-old Olga Galdamez, a Guatemalan national, is back at the Belize Central Prison after her application for bail was denied in the Supreme Court.

On April 10th, a woman police officer was on patrol in Benque Viejo Town when she saw a suspicious group of persons. When the group saw the cops, they all ran.

The officers chased after them, and that's when the female arresting officer recognized Galdamez. This officer recalled a prior encounter with Galdamez, which occurred on April 4th. That's when the woman police corporal caught her traveling from Guatemala; she was attempting to enter Belize Illegally by crossing the Mopan River.

That officer then detained Galdamez and escorted her to a nurse and a public health inspector. Those health officials gave her written directives to remain isolated in her home for 14 days.

So, Galdamez was supposed to be engaging in self-quarantine for the coronavirus, but the same officer caught her disregarding this urgent public health matter 6 days later. She was later arrested and criminally charged, and when she was arraigned in the San Ignacio Magistrate's Court, the presiding magistrate denied her bail and remanded her to the Belize Central Prison.

Almost three months later, Her attorney Hurl Hamilton applied today to the Supreme Court for bail on her behalf. He told the court that she has been living in Belize since she was three years old. Hamilton also added that she has parents and siblings who are living in Belize.

After reviewing the matter, Justice Williams denied her application, and told the court, quote, "There is no apparent reason to overturn the learned trial judge's decision to refuse bail. Consequences of public health cannot be disregarded." End quote.

With that, the judge dismissed her application and remanded her back to Prison.
